San José has long been at the forefront of environmental sustainability, implementing a range of initiatives aimed at combating climate change and promoting a greener future.
Climate Smart San José
In 2018, the city adopted Climate Smart San José, a comprehensive plan aligning with the Paris Agreement’s targets. This plan focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving water, and improving the quality of life for residents. In 2025, the plan was updated to accelerate efforts toward achieving community-wide carbon neutrality by 2030.
Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan
Recognizing the need to prepare for climate-related threats such as wildfires, flooding, and extreme heat, San José developed the Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan (CARP). Approved by the City Council in March 2026, CARP outlines strategies to minimize risks and vulnerabilities, with a particular focus on supporting vulnerable communities disproportionately affected by climate change impacts.
Environmental Innovation Center
The Environmental Innovation Center (EIC) serves as a hub for green enterprise. As the city’s first municipal building to earn LEED Platinum certification, the EIC houses services like Habitat for Humanity ReStore and a Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Its green building features include solar panels, wind turbines, and pervious pavement, showcasing San José’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure.
San José Climate Art Program
To engage the community in climate action, the city launched the San José Climate Art Program. This initiative enlists local artists and cultural institutions to raise public awareness about climate change and to reduce the carbon footprint of cultural events. The program includes the Resilient Artist Program and the Carbon Neutral Creative Network, fostering collaboration between the arts and environmental sectors.
San José Mineta International Airport’s Sustainability Efforts
The San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) integrates environmental responsibility into its operations. The airport’s Sustainability Management Plan aligns with Climate Smart San José, focusing on asset preservation, resilient infrastructure, and reducing emissions. Notable initiatives include the Consolidated Rental Auto Center (ConRAC), which reduces shuttle bus traffic and features a 1MW solar array, and the expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure for both airport operations and travelers.
Through these and other initiatives, San José continues to lead by example in the fight against climate change, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability and resilience.
